The First Night on the Isle

October 21st

"I will destroy you and eat your soul, pathetic worm!" yells Bako as the coils of his serpentine body wrap around Mitsuo. "You are nothing, you insignificant creature." Tighter the coils of his body close in. Mitsuo feels the last of his breath leave his lungs. As his ribs start cracking, he lets out a cry with the last of his strength.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

"Father, wake up, you are having another nightmare!" Kenji looked worriedly at his father as Mitsuo sat upright in his cot, sweat pouring from his face. "There is something about this island that is making the nightmares worse, isn't there?"

"Yes Kenji, it seems there is," sighed Mitsuo. "Magic doesn't work here, but I can feel this land pulse with a strange energy. I can't put my finger on it, but there is power, great power here." Reaching for his flask, he takes a long pull from it, quenching his thirst. "Enough of my worries. Have the patrols found anything?"

"The land is quite average here, it seems. Simple landscape, plenty of trees, and some smaller wildlife. Much of it is rather strange in appearance and extremely skittish. It runs at the slightest sense of us. We have found that some of the plant life is edible, and some of the larger wildlife that we've managed to hunt actually tastes quite good. There seem to be some deer-like animals in the forest that our archers have managed to snare. The mist is quite impenetrable though. It starts about 3 miles from our camp. Matsushiro volunteered to enter the mist and find out what he could. He was able to go in only a few feet before the strange substance filled his lungs and he was no longer able to breathe. Visibility was very limited too. He could barely see his hands in front of his face. I'm afraid that it is impenetrable, so we are going to have to wait until it clears."

"Any contact with the party that occupies the bay to our north?"

"Not yet, father. It's a good day's walk to them, as we seem to be about 20 miles away from their main encampment. We have seen no sign of them approaching us either. We continue to patrol around our base here."

"Good. I don't believe they are aggressive, but I want to take no chances. Make sure that we keep them under watch at all times, but do not be discovered. If they do not know we are here, we have an advantage."

"Of course. Twenty years of avoiding Bako has made us very good at stealth."

"It has indeed. If only I could get him out of my mind."
