Oasis from Sluggy Freelance
02/22/2002
I've enjoyed reading the online comic Sluggy Freelance for quite a while now, and after they did a "Lego Week", I decided I wanted to immortalize one of the characters in a mosaic. I picked Oasis, one of the minor characters that has a very big part in a recent storyline. However, I chose an image of her from one of the earlier strips, when she still had her long, flowing red hair. But it's really not red, it's orange. And thus began the biggest challenge of making this mosaic.
It started simply enough. I took the fifth frame from the 2/18/01 strip, fussed with the colors a bit, and ran it through Lugnet's Mosaic Maker a few times until it looked nice. Its size is 80 studs by 80 studs (25 inches square) and is made up of black, white, light grey, dark grey, orange, and brown bricks. This is where Bricklink came in handy, as I had nowhere near enough orange to complete this. Thanks to all the BrickLink vendors who sold me orange bricks to enable me to finish the project. The final mosaic has a 1x1 black border, and is filled with an abmormally large quantity of orange and brown bricks, and dark grey 1x1's.
