I was offered a unique opportunity in the beginning of April, 2001. I had been buying some blue bulk tubs at my local Toys'R'Us, when one of the people who worked there saw me buying a pile of these things, and asked what the heck I was up to. I told her I was a brick sculptor, and she thought it would be a great idea for me to hang out in the store for a while and do a sculpture. I thought to myself "what a great opportunity!" so I said sure.
Then the thought struck me. I have to come up with something that I can do while sitting in a TRU far away from many of my bricks, and while being constantly interrupted. I figured a mosaic would be a good idea (my Chief Wahoo was a warmup for this) as they're much simpler than a 3D sculpture. Also, I could print out a simple layout to follow along so I wouldn't have to think much. So I bought a few more buckets, sorted all the pieces out, grabbed a few of those yellow Stack-On 17 compartment containers, filled them up and headed out.
The mosaic was made in the same style as the Chief. I created the image as a composite from various other sources, filtered it through Mosaic Maker, threw the grid in with Paint Shop Pro, and went off to the store.
The sculpture is 72 bricks wide and 81 bricks tall. It's two bricks thick. It took about 4 hours overall to complete (I started it the night before).
I spent 3.5 hours at the store, impressing plenty of kids and adults too with all my sculptures. I brought all of the sculptures that I'd built thus far, as well as my Maven space ship. It looks like this will be the beginning of a great relationship with the local TRU.
